The educated class

jan 8, 2010

Apparently there is a newspaper published up north called The New York Times, and, among Yankees, it has nicknames, one of which is The Newpaper of Record. Earlier this week, one of their columnists, David Brooks by name, had published an opinion piece in which he all but stated that anyone not in awe of the "educated class" and their "professional experience" is ignorant. Since the "educated class" believes in global warming, abortion rights, gun control and internationalism, he makes it seem that those who don't believe the same must be considered "uneducated".

He attempts to further denigrate those who participated in, or sympathized with, last summer's Tea Parties, apparently not realizing that he has perfectly defined the majority of American citizens.

The tea party movement is a large, fractious confederation of Americans who are defined by what they are against. They are against the concentrated power of the educated class. They believe big government, big business, big media and the affluent professionals are merging to form self-serving oligarchy - with bloated government, unsustainable deficits, high taxes and intrusive regulation.

In this paragraph, he is correct. We are fractious, we are against big government and concentrated power. Apparently the "educated class" never took a course in American history. A primary reason this country was founded was rebellion against the evils forced on us by the concentrated powers of elite rulers. One would think The Newpaper of Record would recognize that the fact the "educated class" doesn't understand this says far more about their lack of education than it does mine.
